Today was another long and adventurous medical day!
When we woke up this morning, we quickly threw on our clothes and headed straight for breakfast(johnny/journey cakes, pepper eggs, beans, papaya, and guava juice). It was so yummy! After that, we headed down stairs and hopped on the bus headed to Hope Creek!
Once we got to Hope Creek, Taylor, Grace, William, and I all headed straight for the dentist office. We quickly helped them set up and then got straight to work as patients came flooding in. Our office was the hotspot of the day!
One of the patients was a 15 year old girl who had only made it to standard 6 before dropping out of school. This is very common down in Belize. A lot of the girls there do not make it very far in school before they have to start working or taking care of their siblings or even their own children. While her mouth was numbing I got to sit and talk with her it was such a sweet time in the middle of such a hectic day. Little did I know, her and I were about to become closer than we thought…
When Dr. Don came over after getting all of his tools together for the extraction, he looked at me and asked me if i wanted to do it. I was a little startled at first and even thought he was joking. So I told him that I thought it was best that he did it.
But then he insisted on me doing it.
So, right then and there I sat down and pulled three of this sweet girl’s teeth, AND gave her three stitches. What a crazy experience! Here in America(and probably everywhere else in the world) you have to go through several years of schooling to even be able to clean someone’s teeth, much less pull them and then stitch them back up! I know that God gave me strength in that moment because i couldn’t have done it alone.
Time for lunch! One of the local women cooked lunch for everybody and it was very yummy!
Then it was time to get back to work. At this point i was feeling a little lightheaded(probably from dealing with all of the blood and then going straight to lunch). So, i headed to triage and rested for a while. After a couple of minutes, i was feeling better and headed to the chiropractor’s office. He was so fascinating! I sat in there for a couple of hours just watching with McCall. After the patients were gone, he started doing back adjustments for the people on the team. Several people went through and felt better immediately when he was done. After lots of persuasion, they convinced me to do it too. I was a little hesitant, but when he was done i felt lot better! After a couple more people got adjusted, we cleaned the rooms and packed up!
Time to go back to the Macaroni for another yummy dinner! For dessert, we had the best carrot cake i have ever had! Then we did devos, and now once again, showered and exhausted, it is time to head to bed.
